Choosing the right tour is very important. We want our participants to feel comfortable and our groups to bond. We have Tours for every kind of person that loves birds, and we know there are birders with different levels of expertise, interests, and paces. Therefore is important to know what kind of birders the tour has been designed for. In that way you will have more things in common with the rest of the group, and everybody will have a pleasant, fulfilling experience. For best results in the performance of the tours, we have made our own list of Birder Types and difficulty levels.

  Types of Birders

 * Keen Birders: Birders that are dedicated to birding, that study the bird species they might see during the tour before the trip starts. These birders may have a wish list of birds they want to see on the tour and are skilled in the use of binoculars (cameras, scopes) and field guides. Keen birders have the ability to find with their binoculars small and fast birds like tanagers, vireos, and warblers. They also have the interest and patience needed to observe “hard-to-get” secretive birds such as wrens, antbirds, tapaculos, etc.  This kind of birder wants to optimize the birding time and make the most of it, trying to see as many species during the day as possible. They will also participate in the species checklist making every night of the tour.

* Enthusiastic Birders: Birders that have some knowledge of birds and are skilled with binoculars (cameras, scopes). They are willing to spend the entire day birding and can keep pace with the keen Birders. These birders want to improve their birding skills and learn from more experienced birders. Enthusiastic Birders also will participate in the checklist making every night.

* Beginning Birders: Birders that are developing their skills in the use of binoculars and field guides. These birders are recently starting to find small and fast warbler sized birds through their binoculars, and to develop interest and patience for finding “hard-to-get,” secretive birds. They may want to combine birding with other activities like swimming in rivers or the ocean, learning about the culture, visiting museums or archeological sites, enjoying the scenery,, etc.

* Photographers: Dedicated bird photographers, with SLR or mirrorless cameras and telephoto lenses. They know and recognize the bird species and prefer feeders or setups, where they will try their best to get outstanding photographs. The size of the checklist is not their priority. Getting amazing pictures is their main objective.

Tour Difficulty Level

 * Easy: This kind of tours  will have mild walks in flat  and hilly terrains. Most of the days of the tour will begin early (between 5:30 and  6:00 am). Land transportation (Transfers) will last approximately 1.5 hours to 2.5 hours. These tours will have only 6 hours per day on the field (Go slow Tours). There will be time in the afternoon to relax, read a book or swim in the afternoons.

* Moderate: Mild walks in flat and hilly terrains. All days of the tour will begin early (between 5:00 and 6:00 am, some 4:30 am). Land transportation (1.5 hours to 2.5 hours) most of the time and occasionally longer drives. These tours may be birding exclusively or Birding Cultural.

* Challenging: Long walks (more than 2 hours) on possibly steep and muddy trails that require rubber boots. All days of the tour will begin early (between 5:00 and 6:00 am). Land transportation (1:30 hours to 2:30 hours) most of the time and occasionally longer drives. These tours are birding exclusively.
